Your Image is Your Visual Business Card

Think of Your Image As Your Offline Social Media Profile [8 min. read]

Well-dressed Black ManAs the internet has become the standard of millions of people's daily lives, social relationships have increasingly weakened. Most people have substituted deep conversations, strong connections and relationship building for direct messages, tweets and Instagram posts. You typically see this in our “record everything” social culture whereas people more often than the latter, record things on their phone before they actually enjoy and embrace the moment in the moment. Through the lens of society’s camera phones, people cannot see your personality. However, through your image people make a judgement based on how you look and how you carry yourself. The judgement derived from what they see and observe gives them an idea of your personality .. and this all happens in seconds. Although the social fabric of human interaction has always has it's negatives, it is more prominent now as people are more conditioned to value beauty. This is a truth that most people don’t like to admit but people judge you based on how you look! Whether that is a bad judgement or a good judgement really depends on how well you are dressed.

" People Don't Like To Admit It But People Judge You Based On How You Look "

Do yourself a favor and answer honestly the questions I'm asking you based on these scenario. You have been invited to two events.. one is a social networking event and the other is a album listening party. The social networking event is a fashionable, get together with very prominent people, and a luxe social dynamic. Wine (Red and White) is served chilled along with tasty hor 'd'oeuvres. Do you think the people at the social gathering will be in either:

A. Tank tops, Knee-length Plaid Shorts, and Sandals (Casual)

B. Collar Shirts, Slacks or Pants (Business Casual)

C. Overcoats, Gloves, Rain Boots, Beanies (Snow Wear)

D. Hoodies, Sweatpants, Tennis Shoes (Comfy Wear)

If you've chosen (B) Business Casual, you've got it right! Most likely, people at the gathering will be dressed in business casual because this look tells a visual message that that person is social, friendly and wants to conduct business where there is opportunity. What about the other place I've presented in this scenario. Using the same choice answers, choose the most proper attire. At the album listening party, it is a social gathering of your favorite artist new debut album. There are big sound speakers in the room, with a stage and a microphone centered in the room. Music is bumping, and headphones are passed out for people to listen to the singles released in your favorite artist's album. Do you think the people at the social gathering will be in either:

A. Tank tops, Knee-length Plaid Shorts, and Sandals (Casual)

B. Collar Shirts, Slacks or Pants (Business Casual)

C. Overcoats, Gloves, Rain Boots, Beanies (Snow Wear)

D. Hoodies, Sweatpants, Tennis Shoes (Comfy Wear)

If you've chosen (D) Comfy Wear, you've got it right! Most likely people at the listening party will be dressed in comfy wear because the event is a more relaxed dynamic and represents a calm, less professional atmosphere. These examples are to illustrate how without even knowing it, you may have judged someone based on what attire is more appropriate. Hey don't feel bad --- even a nightclub has a dress code! Try telling the bouncer that you should be allowed to a upscale party, although you are wearing dingy sweatpants and a crop top tank top. They would turn you away because you don't fit the dress code. if you were dressed appropriate to the dress code, you would have most likely had no problem being admitted in with no credentials. So what does this really mean? You have the power to control people's perception of you by being well dressed, and looking grand. This truth is not intended to used maliciously and or for ill gain. Controlling the perception of what other's think about you is imperative to communication and character. There is nothing wrong with being aware of how you look and dressing the part of someone other can respect. If you want to put your best foot forward, wear the right shoes.

We've discussed the subtle observations of a positive image but what would happen if you don't keep up yourself? We'll find that out shortly, but before we dive into that it is important to say that your image is only half the battle. As I've stated earlier, you cannot take a picture of someone and as instantly know their personality. Your image speaks for you but when the great introduction is already made, your personality is what keeps the conversation going. Your image gets you in the door and the content of your character keeps you in the room. When you don't keep up with yourself or you just look bad -- people will assume the worst. Wearing dingy cheap clothing, people will assume you're broke and have no taste. People won't trust you or believe that you have anything of value to say. No one will want to be associated with you aside from people who also look bad. Not caring about your image or look will lead others to choose you last, if at all. Opportunities will pass you up because you don't look like you can handle them. People are innately drawn to beauty, no one stays up all night, planning a date and their approach to an ugly person who doesn't take care of him/herself.

Public Relations, Branding, Brand, Designer, Entrepreneur

Take my last statement about staying up all night planning a date with a grain of salt and a pound of wisdom. My intention is not to bash or slander people who aren't beautiful and don't care about how they look because honestly even the most beautiful people think that they're ugly. It's all relative but what we all can agree on is how you dress is important, tells other people about you, and that message is used to construct an idea of you. You've heard the saying "Dress For The Job You Want, Not The Job You Have" and it is well informative for more than attaining a job. It is useful for life, I'd say dress for the life you want not the life you're leaving behind. Avoid being isolated, deprived of attention you deserve, being regarded as the lower class, and people being disgusted by your hygiene by taking good care of yourself. Taking care of yourself includes taking care of your appearance. Your appearance is how you appear to be.

The takeaway from this article is to be aware that how you look says a lot about you. People are visual beings and they process the information they receive from their eyes to formulate opinions of you in their mind. The benefit of looking good can cause you to reap many awards including belonging, compliments, better treatment from others and there are consequential pitfalls to not looking so good. You can be an awesome person but if you aren't presentable, people who don't know you will think they shouldn't associate with you, less likely to trust you, won't have a physical attraction to you and may even go so far as to assume you're from a lower class of people. In a social class system, being identified and perceived as lower class can have implications on your life regarding mental health, income/career opportunities, and social/love life. If you aren't dressing well or just weren't aware of the silent factors contributing to misfortune, do yourself a favor and Get Out Of Your Own Way! The good life is waiting for you on the other side of your changed habits. Shop for a new wardrobe that looks grand, fits well and compliments you. The special attention you pay to your appearance today will pay off in the short and long term as soon as tomorrow.
